What Is Windows S Mode?
In S mode, you are not able to install traditional desktop software.
If the app doesnt come from the Microsoft Store, it wont work.

While other browsers likeFirefox have a Microsoft Store version, they wont work in S mode.
S mode is also available for Windows 11, which weve discussed separately.
How Do I Get Windows in S Mode?
S mode isnt something you choose to turn on or purchase separately.
Rather, its enabled by default on certain Windows machines.
Technically, you might adjustyour Windows 10 install mediato drop in the OS in S mode.
But its arduous to do so; most people have no reason to bother.
Do I Have Windows 10 in S Mode?
Its easy to peek if your copy of Windows 10 is in S mode.
OpenSettingsand go toUpdate & Security > Activation.
In theWindowssection, youll seeWindows 10 [Home/Pro] in S modeif youre running that version.
If you dont see mention of S mode, youre running a standard version of Windows 10.
How to Leave S Mode in Windows 10
Microsoft lets you leave S mode at no cost.
ChooseGet, confirm the terms, and then your gear will exit the mode.
Note that leaving S mode is a one-way trip.
Once you turn this off, you cant go back into S mode.
Should You Use Windows 10 in S Mode?
Manymust-have Windows apps, like Spotify and VLC, have a version available on the Store.
But plenty of other apps dont.
You canprevent software from running at startupto achieve the same effect in regular Windows.
For your own machine, though, the limitations are more frustrating than useful.
