Linux is one of the most secure operating systems out there.

One common tool that system administrators and home users use alike is the firewall.

The remaining thing is then how we can specify these rules.

In other words it’s far from what you would call user friendly.

UFW & GuFW

For Ubuntu users there is theUncomplicated Firewall(also called UFW).

UFW is also a command line utility, although it has a much simpler syntax.

Firestarter

Firestarter is yet another popular tool, that makes Linux firewall configuration a lot easier.

The wizard takes care of detecting your connection equipment and optionally setting up Internet Connection Sharing and the likes.

In the following screen, for example I am allowing inbound HTTP traffic from the host 192.168.0.56.

Add the optional comment if you desire and the rule is added.

These are not the only tools available for configuring Linux firewalls.

There are others like ipkungfu andshorewall, which let you do the same things.
