What Was Microsoft’s Tay?

Tay was an AI chatbot developed by Microsoft and made available via Twitter on March 23, 2016.

Why Did Microsoft Shut Down Tay?

Microsoft took down Tay within 24 hours of going livefor a good reason.

And far it went indeed.

Clearly, Microsoft was having a terrible time, and it couldn’t have let the service continue.

Here are some of those lessons:

1.

Apparently, it was so to Microsoft back in 2016.

Still, it definitely wasn’t the smartest idea, either.

Training an AI model using people’s conversations on the internet is a horrible idea.

Because people are simply not their best selves on the internet.

They get emotional, use slang words, and use their anonymity to be nefarious.

This was true even more so back in 2016.

What’s obvious to humans isn’t obvious to AI; in other words, it lacks common sense.

It may behave and sound human to a surprising degree, but good programming can only go so far.

The point here is that artificial intelligence is perfectly obedient, which is perhaps its greatest strength and weakness.

Everything that you don’t want a chatbot to do must be manually programmed into it.

AI Chatbots Should Never Be Left Unsupervised

Until AI can regulate itself, it can’t be left unsupervised.

If left unattended, people will exploit its weaknessesand Tay was a prime example of this.
